NATO Allies met this morning in the North Atlantic Council (Wednesday 12 August) to discuss the recent airspace violations in Poland and Romania, as well as recent drone incidents. They expressed their full solidarity with and support for the affected Allies.
Allies reiterated that Russia bears full responsibility for the airspace violations, which are dangerous and unacceptable, and demonstrate Russia’s increasing tolerance for risk.
NATO Allies made clear that they stand united and resolute in the defence of Allied territory. They commended the swift actions of NATO and national authorities in responding decisively to the events. NATO continues to strengthen its integrated air and missile defences across the Alliance, and Allies underlined the actions they have taken to bolster defences on the eastern flank, from the Baltic to the Black Sea. NATO stands ready to deter and defend against any aggression.
At the same time, Allies reaffirmed their full support for Ukraine in defending its freedom, sovereignty, and territorial integrity and the pursuit of peace. Allies underscored that they will not be deterred by these and other irresponsible acts by Russia from their enduring commitment to Ukraine, whose security contributes to ours.
